BOOK ART

Book Art is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appear-ance and/or meaning. A book, old, new, recycled, could be cut, teared, glued, burned, painted, folded and so on. Artist's books have a long history yet are perhaps one of the more difficult of the fine art genres to define. While Duchamp stated "An artist's book is what an artist calls a book." Noted critic and author Lucy Lippard posited that they are "neither an artbook, collected, reproductions of separate work or a book on art work." The artistsbook is a work of art on its own, concieved specifically for the book form and often published by the artist him/herself. In general an artistbook is concieved as a project in book form and the structure of the book is an intergrated aspect of the overall concept. Some of the strucural conciderations may include, but are not limited to the binding, the lack of binding, the way the pages are fold or may be kept loose in a portfolio box, slipover, the use of a scroll in lieu of pages, a lack of text into imagery or the use of traditional or non traditional materials and formats.
